Practicing law is mentally challenging. Dealing with witnesses, victims, State Attorneys, Judges and several other entitites in a day can take a toll on you. Not only that, but it can also affect your physical well being. It is easy to get stuck at the computer or in court and get used to sitting all day. I subscribe to and have a list I look at everyday of 7 habits I employ in my life:
#1 I don't buy junk food and keep it around the office or house. It is called junk for a reason. I have rid my life of all chips, cookies, candy, pre-packaged snacks and replaced them with fruit, vegis, nuts and other healthy snacks.
#2 I have a priority to exercise. I put exercise before leisure time. I schedule everything around my runs and my gym time.
#3 I stop eating when I am full. I no longer stuff my face with food just to clear my plate. It was hard to employ this habit but I am so much happier after about 30 minutes of not eating every last bite.
#4 I push myself. I challenge myself in every run and workout. I don't just go through the motions to get through a run or to spend exactly an hour in the gym. I would be cheating my body out of results if I didn't push myself. Exercise hurts, it makes you sweat, it makes your muscles burn and it should leave you with a feeling of accomplishment.
#5 I don't eat in front of the tv. Eating in front of a tv is mindless eating. Paying attention to what is on tv and not on your food and you will be less tuned in to what and how much ends up in your mouth.
#6 I drink water. Yes, water only. Occassionally it is nice to have a diet soda or some coffee but one serving and that is it. I don't drink 10 diet cokes a day because they supposedly have 0 calories. Our bodies are made up of water and it needs to be replished every single day. I shoot for 100 ozs per day.
#7 I have support. I have friends and people at the gym that support my lifestyle. It is easy to hit the snooze button or talk myself out of going to the gym. However, knowing that people are looking at me for guidance and expect me to lead a healthy lifestyle fuels my desire to be the best physically I can be. Having the support of others holds me accountable.
